How to Make Compost?

What is compost
All materials of animal and plant waste rot down and return to the soil with the help of micro-organisms. The resulting material is rich in nutrients and ‘humus’ (decayed organic matter). Humus improves the physical properties of the soil and helps the soil to maintain a free-draining structure (stable humus). It is also a source of nutrients, especially nitrogen (nutritional humus). Humus is, therefore, the goal of composting. A compost heap is simply an environment in which this natural process can be speeded up. By providing the right environment for the organisms in the compost pile, a good quality compost may be produced.

It helps to think of the compost pile as a living entity which is made up of many millions of microbes. These microbes produce compost more quickly when there is a mixture of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials in the pile. As the microbes become active, they create heat. This heat kills diseases and insect pests in the pile. To encourage a strong population of micro-organisms favourable conditions are required, for example food, warmth, moisture and air. The compost heap must, therefore, be constructed in a way which complies to these requirements.

How to make compost?
